Kellyann Royce-Giron, a 1990 graduate, has been chosen by the Board of Education to take over at Poughkeepsie High School as principal, effective as of Tuesday, Feb. 18. Her appointment comes following a lengthy interview process that dates back to last October.

Royce-Giron started her career 20 years ago as a staff member at Poughkeepsie Middle School. She has also served as a counselor with the New York City Department of Education, a special education teacher and transitioned to an administrative role in September 2016 as an assistant principal.

Royce-Giron is leaving the New Venture STEAM Academy in the Bronx where she served the same position she will be taking over in Poughkeepsie.

The new principal said she plans to hit the ground running, meeting with staff and students to assess what improvements can be made at the high school.

“We think about ways to prevent a problem before it starts,” she said. “We need to look at the data and assess what the needs are and organize the data to make informed decisions.

“Once in the building, it’s about building relationships and changing the culture. It’s about providing the safest space possible for students to learn and grow and leave Poughkeepsie High School with a plan.”

Poughkeepsie Schools Superintendent Eric Rosser said that “Royce-Giron comes highly recommended by top current and past leadership in the New York City Department of Education.”

“Principal Royce-Giron possesses the passion, innovation and commitment needed to serve as a member of the leadership team who will strengthen the outcome of all students,” he said. “We are fortunate to have an alum, who has emerged to be an effective transformational leader who values collaboration and is child-centered, return to assist in the development and execution of the district’s strategic plan.”
